Long Term Stocks: You see a Bear Market coming like a freight train. What do you do?

If you are going to tell me you can't see it, then hit the back button. Right now. Thanks. Ok, what do you do with your long term stocks when you see a bear market coming and why? Do you: Liquidate all your stocks and watch the market fall Look for stocks to short sell Sell some of your stocks, but keep the ones that are outperforming the market, you have the most confidence in, or have a good history in bear markets (and don't say consumer staples - it's been proven false, and stock speculation has nothing to do with buying toothpaste) Sell worse stocks and keep the better ones to a large degree, just in case you're wrong. Invest in assets with negative betas, such as gold. Other - specify Thanks!

  1. what i would do is sell all my stocks and just look for stocks to short to profit from the bear market.
  2. If you are willing to wait it out and don't mind watching your portfolio's value drop like a rock for awhile, then by all means hold and even buy more if you feel there's a recovery on the horizon. One comes eventually, and when Dubya and his morons are out of office the markets will re-align themselves.
  3. Why would you sell the stock short and watch a bear market. If your going to buy it back when it goes bull then your the one to hit the back button. Long term means long term. You keep the stock until it matures. The best thing for you is to open a CD and let the bank short and long your interest rates.
  4. Buy sin stocks such as BUD and MO along with energy stocks XOM and if you wanna make it easy buy a bear market fund like PSSAX that will provide you with a return opposite what the market does. Ex: If the market goes down 20%, you make 20%. Precious metals are also a winner.
