Why do trucking companies financially discourage their drivers from lumping freight.? Ive been doing this job on and off since the early 90's, and it always bothered me that companies will pay drivers so much less than they will pay lumpers. I have my theories to explain this, but I have no way to prove or disprove them. I am looking for someone who has inside information, who may have worked within the infrastructure of a company and who has dealt with such decisions and the reasons for them. Please support your assertion as best you can. Thanx.

Does anyone know of any reputable 'freight & shipping' companies out there? My wife and I are moving from Missouri to Oregon. We are newlywed so our belongings are not many (a 1 bedroom apt. ) so we do not want a whole UHAUL/Penske truck for that distance. We are trying to find some freight & shipping companies that might take our furniture and some boxes/containers, so that we really just need to drive there and save on gas too. The best bet we have so far is 'Freight & Shipping, Inc.'they offered us a total of $770 but there BBB rating is 'unsatisfactory'... so we are not so sure about them. But if anyone has any better ideas, please let me know, thanks.

What's a good trucking company to work for? My husband has a class A license with all his endorsements. Right now he drives for a food distribution service. His job is fine, but he has to drive all through NYC and he unloads the truck by himself w a handcart and a ramp. We're looking for a different driving company with not so much hands on freight. A company that values family and pays fair. Any suggestions? Thanks! He has had his CDL for 6 months. He doesn't mind physical labor and is open to local or over the road. He's spoken to over the road recruters and has been told of the money he could make. For the right job, we would consider re-locating.
What is the difference between a Truck Dispatcher and Freight Broker (EXPERT NEEDED)? I am in a leagal dispute with my former employer in which I worked as a freight broker. One of the carriers I used as a broker asked me if I knew of someone to become his personal dispatcher. I then set up a company and my g/f handeled the dispatching service from her home. My employer then terminated me and is sueing me because they claim I set up a competivie business against him. I would like the thoughts of other Transportation Industry Pros on this. If anyone could help or send information about this issue I would be very gratefull. Thank You All.

I was reading the wage and hours laws and regulations but i'm still not entirely clear on what the law is saying. If i am exempt from overtime pay, according to the law, then does that mean that i also am not obligated to work for more than 40hrs/week? if my employer is exempt from paying me overtime after 40hrs (for safety reasons, according to the law), does my employer have the right to force me to work over 40hrs/wk? thanks for your help.

Is there any maximum no. of company for an O/O to have a carrier contract to haul some loads with? We are trucking company (with 53" trailer) based on Los Angeles, CA, USA and so far we have two companies that we have a contract(freight carrier), to haul some loads, and we think its not enough because sometimes they don't have any loads on that particular state. Is there any problem signing up on as much as Companies (brokers / 3PLs) that we want so we can have more resources? Is there any impact on our insurance since we are adding these companies as additoinal insured? Your answer(s) will be greatly appreciated. Additional info: These companies we are in contract with are brokerage companies. And we are only independent contractors, we either check on their online load boards or call their agents if there is available load(s) inbound and outbound to a particular state whereever our truck is. Sometimes these 2 brokerage companies does not have enough loads because our truck/driver get stuck in East Coast for 2-3 days before we can get a load back to california, unless we get a load to other brokers for a one time service (not contract).
